Understanding peer-review: Home

A quick guide about the peer-review process and how to find peer-reviewed sources.
What is a peer-reviewed article?
Peer-reviewed or scholarly articles are studies that are evaluated by experts prior to publication. Experts consider if the article meets certain criteria of originality and quality, recommending revisions that must be made as a condition for publication in an academic journal.

Peer-review process explained

Journals may have different standards regarding their peer-review process, but the image below provides a good description of the basic steps.

Common types of peer-review:

  • Double-blind: neither the author nor the reviewers know each other's identities. This is the most common type of peer-review.
  • Single-blind: the reviewers know the author's identity, but the author doesn't know who the reviewers are.
  • Open review: comments by the reviewers and authors are openly discussed before publication. The platform F1000Research uses this form of review.
