How to create a research poster

A guide about how to design a research poster, plus best practices and templates for research presentation.

What to consider

When designing your poster, follow these general guidelines:

  • Dimensions: the traditional size is 48" x 36", in either horizontal or vertical position. Tri-fold posters usually have 48" x 36" or 40" x 28".
  • Font: font size, colour, and style matter. Sans serif fonts are good fonts for titles, headers, and labels, while serif fonts are usually recommended for the body of your text. Font size can vary depending on the size of your poster, but it is recommended that titles are in 85 pt. author's names in 56 pt. sub-headings in 36 pt., body text in 24 pt., and captions in 18 pt.
  • Paragraph alignment: align all paragraphs to the left.
  • Poster sections: a standard research poster may contain the following sections, left to right; consider which of these may be the most appropriate to illustrate your project.
